SON begins local products’ MANCAP certification

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has commenced the full implementation of the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme for products manufactured in the country.

According to the agency, the MANCAP will promote competitiveness of products manufactured in Nigeria, particularly those by cottage, small and medium enterprises.

The Director-General, SON, Dr. Joseph Odumodu, in a speech made available to our correspondent in Abuja, stated that the programme would help local manufacturers implement the requirements of relevant standards.

Odumodu, who also spoke about the World Standards Day said, “The full implementation of this programme has commenced through SON offices in all states of the federation and I wish to use this medium to urge all local manufacturers and assemblers to cooperate in getting their products certified.

“The process is designed to assist them implement the requirements of relevant standards from raw materials to finished product, with a view to offering quality products that offer value for money to consumers.”

He noted that the certification would also ensure that locally manufactured products were subjected to similar conformity processes like the imported products undergo with SON’s certification programme.

This, he said, had created a level playing field as stated by the theme of the 2014 World Standards Day celebration, which was: ‘Standards level the playing field’.

Odumodu said the celebration was organised by three international standardisation bodies, the International Organisation for Standards, International Telecommunications Union and the International Electrotechnical Commission.
