Mainstream Energy, RusHydro start rehabilitation of Kainji, Jebba power plants

The Board of Directors of Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited has approved the Capacity Recovery Plan (CRP) for the rehabilitation of the Kainji and Jebba hydropower plants in Nigeria (with a total installed capacity of 1.3 GW) prepared by RusHydro International AG, a subsidiary of RusHydro.

The next step for RusHydro International AG will be to assist Mainstream Energy Solutions, which bought both plants through the power privatisation process, to prepare tender documentation and commence procurement (tender) procedures for the supply of equipment, construction, and assembly work.

In 2013, RusHydro and Mainstream Energy signed a five-year cooperation agreement in regards to modernisation of the Kainji and Jebba hydropower plants in Nigeria.

The engineering services provided by RusHydro International AG include development of project documentation, organisation of tenders for equipment supply as well as for installation and construction works, and also consulting on operation and maintenance of the plants. RusHydro International AG implements the project in partnership with Institute Hydroproject (RusHydro Group), Pöyry and Mott MacDonald.

The Kainji and Jebba hydropower plants are located on the River Niger, and have installed capacity of 750 MW and 578 MW, respectively.

The current available capacity of the plants is substantially below their installed capacity.

The concession conditions provide for rehabilitation and modernisation of the power plants and bringing their capacity back to the design level.
