E-ID card will promote cross-border trade – Wigwe

The Managing Director, Access Bank Plc, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, has said the commencement of electronic national identity card will change the country’s payment system.

Wigwe stated this in Abuja during an interview on the sidelines of the unveiling of the national identity card.

He said the project, being supported by Access bank, would promote cross-border trade and economic prosperity of Nigerians.

The Access Bank boss said, “The introduction and subsequent launch of the national electronic identity card (e-ID card), which will improve the quality of living in Nigeria, is a major revolution and groundbreaking achievement.

“The national e-ID card is a first-rate initiative that will facilitate socio-economic development of the country. In specific terms, Nigerians, with the launch of the card, will find an easier means of proving their nationality.

“Also, the national e-ID card will help to immediately remove the initial trust barriers that characterise business dealings between Nigerians and citizens of other countries, thereby promoting cross-border trade and economic prosperity of Nigerians.”

Wigwe commended the Federal Government for approving the project, stressing that with this initiative, the security of the nation would witness a significant boost as the national e-ID card project would provide the basis upon which future security-based milestones could be built on.

He said the bank’s partnership with the National Identity Management Commission has provided another opportunity to highlight its commitment to nation building.

He said, “Nigerians will begin to enjoy first class payment solutions hinged on electronic transactions as a result of improved identity management in the country.

“We are excited by the challenge of maintaining our leadership status as the most innovative bank in Nigeria and are encouraged to champion initiatives that support financial inclusion as well as propel our great nation to greater heights.”
