Bresson SA to generate 90MW from Magboro plant

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo on Friday July 11, 2014 performed the ground breaking ceremony for the 90 megawatt Magboro power plant owned by Bresson SA Nigeria Limited.

The event which was attended by power sector industry experts, financiers of the project led by Ecobank and the representatives of technical partners to the project Aggreko Projects Limited and IEG also had in attendance the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Power, Ambassador Godknows Igali.

In his remarks at the event Professor Nebo reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to generate 6,000MW of electricity by December 2014 and 20,000 megawatts by 2020, despite the problems facing the sector.

The Minister commended the Chairman of Bresson SA Limited, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo and his team for the foresight they had 10 years ago to invest in power generation even when there was no legal framework for such investment.

Nebo charged other investors who have been given Independent Power Project licenses to partner with government to provide stable electricity in the country adding that the cost of providing and maintaining infrastructure is high and therefore, requires participation of more investors.

‘’We salute the resilience of Bresson SA Limited and Gbenga for conceiving and actualising this project which he has promised us will be commissioned in the next 12 months. I am holding him to that commitment and I will join him in prayers,’’ the minister said.

The Chairman, Bresson AS Energy, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo, while commenting on the power situation in the country, called for more investment, especially by the private sector, in Nigeria’s power sector. Olawepo, whose company planned to build 90 megawatts Magboro Power Plant, highlighted the imperative of adequate power supply in the evolution and sustenance of any economy.

He said, “Nigeria has emerged as the largest economy on the African continent. The implication of this is that the economy needs no interruption in terms of growth, to enable the system reap from multipliers and a continued stimulation. An uninterrupted power supply is the key, and besides the government, the private sector also has to be active.”

Revealing that about $10m had been spent by his company on the project in the last 10 years to prepare the ground work of the Magboro power plant, he said, “The ultimate goal of the firm is to deliver affordable, cleaner and efficient energy using environmentally friendly technologies tailored to meet the needs of our customers and help our people to become energy sufficient.”

He said Bresson AS was committed to making power outage a thing of the past, to improve the quality of life across all sectors of the economy and to reduce poverty by making available the needed energy for growth and development.

He added, “Our aim as an energy producing company is to help our people live better lives.”

Founded in 2005, Bresson AS is building the Magboro 90MW power plant at the Lagos corridor, in Ogun State. The power plant will generate energy to boost power generation in the country.

The company also hopes to bring the Magboro plant configured on 2GE 600 to commissioning in year 2015. The Magboro plant is designed for supply of power to the National grid, while an additional 20MW project, a joint project between Bresson and Aggreko is designed to serve the immediate neighborhoods of Magboro as an embedded generation option.
