By on July 2, 2014

Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPN), operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC/MPN) joint venture, has stated that only 12 barrels of oil was released during the incident at its Qua Iboe Terminal (QIT) in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

Making the clarification in a press statement   Tuesday, the United Stated oil major said a detailed site inspection revealed that “an approximately 12 barrels of oil was released during the incident and not 600,000 barrels as erroneously reported in most media houses.”

The oil giant explained that the liquid release from the QIT facility last Sunday, followed serious weather conditions and lightning strikes over the area. It said relevant regulatory authorities and community leaders were immediately notified, while work has since commenced to ensure the impacted area was remediated.
