By on June 29, 2014

The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms Arunma Oteh, stressed the importance of financial literacy among investors, saying it is a vital key to positive investment decisions in the nation’s  capital market.

Oteh stated this at during the public presentation of a  book ‘An Insight into the Nigerian Capital Market’written by Dr. (Mrs.) Jane Onuku Itseuwa and Dr Uche Uwaleke in Abuja.

Represented by Mrs Mary Uduk, the SEC boss, urged investors to take interest in understanding the basic information about the dynamics of the market with a view to knowing when and which  securities to invest in.

According to understanding the market will enable them to effectively participate in the capital market and protect them from unnecessary  frauds or other abuses in the capital market.

Oteh hailed  the authors for contributing to  the on-going initiatives by the SEC on its investor education, saying  through the authors, through their efforts  are  encouraging more Nigerians to invest in the capital market for  medium and long term benefits.

“The 27 chapters x-rayed, among other topics, the structure of the Nigerian financial system, the market intermediaries, the role of players in the market, the Nigerian capital market, its features and characteristics , the legal environment, instruments and reforms in the  market.

“This is a great contribution to the development of the Nigerian Capital Market. It is hoped that this book will evoke the inspiration in others to embark on further research in specialised topics and production of books and journals on the capital market”, Oteh said.

Speaking  on the book, Itseuwa said  it is an attempt by the authors to share their intellectual knowledge and practical experiences with other Nigerians on how to invest in the capital  market.

“The message we are passing out is we want more Nigerians to know the capital market, we want them to understand the market because it is our market and if they don’t understand the market, they will not be able to function properly in it.

“Like I said some days back, 2008 was a dismal experience for investors in Nigeria and it was because they didn’t understand the market. This book is intended to avert that type of crisis by educating investors and helping to guide them on how to go about their investment decisions,” she said.
