Kenya Airways commences direct flight services to Abuja

At exactly 12.45 pm, Friday,c , the national carrier of the Kenya government, touched down in Abuja from Nairobi, thus opening a new chapter in direct passenger flight services from Nairobi to Abuja. This is besides its normal flight schedules from Nairobi to Lagos.

The arrival of the 400 passenger commercial plane registered 5Y-KYC, was greeted with excitement by the large Kenyan delegates who accompanied the flight at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Nigeria’s  Minister of Culture, National Orientation and Tourism, Chief Edem Duke ,and her Kenya counterpart were onboard the four hour flight from Nairobi.
Kenya’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr. Michael Kamau, while briefing Journalists said: “Arriving here today, confirms Kenya’s government commitment to boost our already existing bilateral relations with Nigeria. We are excited that Kenya’s Airways has today made its maiden direct flight to Abuja.

“This confirms our commitment to adequately address all barriers to trade between our two countries and indeed in Africa.  The commitment arises from the joint undertaking between President Jomo Kenyatta and President Goodluck Jonathan, during the latter’s state visit to Nigeria last month.”

He said the airline has come to connect Nigeria not just to Africa, but to the rest of the world, adding that Kenya Airways has always had a wonderful relationship with Nigerians since it commenced commercial flights into Lagos in the 1980s.

According to him, the government of Kenya in conjunction with Kenya airways was also very keen in promoting tourism opportunities between the two countries by taking advantage of the existing Bilateral Air and Safety Services (BASA), adding that, Kenya airways will take the lead in promoting bilateral tourism opportunities.

He said, “It would remain in Kenya’s best interest to see Nigerian tourists as much as it remains Nigeria’s best interest to boost Kenya’s tourism in this beautiful city of Africa.
“Kenya government is investing in air infrastructure, to give passengers a comfortable experience through our airports. This includes a new terminal 4 at the Jomo Kenyatta international airport which will be commissioned soon. It is expected to carry 12.4 million passengers upon completion in 2017. He however regretted  Africa’s low volume of intra trade and its low global air passenger traffic
