Domestic carriers face stiff competition as Azman begins operation

Air travelers have expressed the hope that entrance of Azman Air into Nigeria’s air transport subsector will engender competition and bring down air fares, which went up sharply before the just concluded World Economic Forum for Africa (WEFA).

The airline, which received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Monday, said it would resume operation today, having met all the conditions to start operation.

Chairman of Azman Airlines, Dr. Abdulmunaf Yunusa, told journalists on Wednesday that the airline would build a strong foundation for the future and dismissed speculations that the airline’s operation may not last as it was the case with many Nigerian airlines.

Yunusa explained that the airline went through a very rigorous safety test before it was issued with the operating licence and gave a firm assurance that the airline’s services would be very efficient.

The airline, Yunusa further stated plans to establish a highly diversified business conglomerate that would provide goods and services, as well enhance the development of the Nigerian economy.

THISDAY gathered that the management of the airline plans to invest huge amount of money in the Nigerian aviation sector and also hopes to expand its operations by developing new routes and services in favour of the average passenger.

Industry stakeholders observed that the emergence of Azman would help reduce air fares, especially on the triangular routes of Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt.
Aside airline business, the Azman is a major player in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Established in 2007, Azman oil and Gas Company Limited has extensive interests in oil and gas, transportation, real estate and Aviation.
