NPA transfers 2,279 overtime containers to Ikorodu

The Nigerian Ports Authority has said it has transferred 2,279 twenty-foot Equivalent Unit overtime containers from the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa, to the Ikorodu Lighter Terminal.

The Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, NPA, Mr. Musa Illiya, said on Tuesday in Lagos that the containers were moved to Ikorodu between February 2 and March 5, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Overtime containers are those that have overstayed their period at the ports, in most cases after a period of 90 days.

Illiya said that the aim of the movement was to avoid congestion of cargoes at the ports.

“Normally, the port is supposed to be a transit point. It is not supposed to be a storage facility. There should be room for new cargoes to come in,” he said.

Illiya said the movement of the containers by the NPA was done in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service, which had gazetted them.

He added that the owners could visit the Customs to claim the containers.
