N10bn water business thrives in Nigeria daily – NAFDAC

The Director-General of  National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Dr Paul Orhii, says N10bn is made daily from water business in Nigeria.

Orhii stated this on Tuesday in Abuja when he visited the Director-General of NYSC, Brig.- Gen. Johnson Olawumi,.

He said based on the turnover from the water production, a lot of people had ventured into the business but expressed regret that in spite of the prospect of the business, some people wanted to cut corners to make more money.

“Drug is our major problem. We manufacture less than 30 per cent of the essential medicine we take in Nigeria,’’ Orhii said.

He decried the global business of drug faking, which stood at N3.2tr per annum.

Orhii expressed appreciation for the collaboration between NAFDAC and NYSC.

“NYSC is an organisation we can’t play with; we came to say thank you for what you have been doing for us,” he said.

He said the agency had set up a small business desk to work with corps members who would constitute a fraction of the 2,000 NAFDAC workforce.

Olawumi appreciated the efforts of NAFDAC in the fight against fake and counterfeit drugs.

He noted that Nigeria’s population had made it a choice destination for people trafficking in fake drugs.

“We are all working together to achieve the same purpose, we are ready to help. NYSC is spread across the country which puts it in a better position to work with NAFDAC; we will continue to deploy our structures to help you.

“It is necessary for us to have a standing committee that will work more on the collaboration. We are always ready to partner  you and ready to expand the collaboration,’’ he said.
