NSC boss seeks amendment of shippers’ law

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC, Hassan Bello has stressed the need for the law establishing the council to be amended in order to empower it to tackle the challenges faced by shippers in the country.

Bello in a chat with Vanguard in his office recently, said that the council cannot compel any defaulting operators to do the right thing because the present law does not give the council the power of enforcement.

The NSC boss explained that the council has made several attempts through the National Assembly to amend the law but its efforts are yet to yield the desired result.

According to him “The council has reviewed the existing law not even once but twice. We have engaged the National Assembly towards that too. Some of our recommendation has even become a bill. We have the encouragement of stakeholders because it is the stakeholders that will make input on proposed law.”

He further said that the Government is concerned with Shippers’ transaction with other stakeholders and has mobilized the Council to take up the role of a moderator and regulator in the shipping industry.

Bello pointed out that Council has worked hard to erect transport infrastructure like, Truck Transit Parks, TTPs, some of which are expected to become functional this year.

He said “We have already started talking with NPA, the Kogi state government, Kaduna state government, and many more state governments, and we hope that these things will be done on Public Private Partnership, PPP, will be done on Public Private Partnership, PPP, will commence operation soon,” he concluded.
