Private investors generated 1,546MW electricity in 2013 – FG
A total of 1,546 megawatts of electricity was generated by private investors in the power sector in 2013, the Federal Government has said.
According to the government, the planned target for the private investors during the period was 1,755MW.
Delivering a presentation on the occasion of the peer review mechanism for permanent secretaries in the federal civil service held at the Federal Ministry of Power on Tuesday, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Amb. Godknows Igali, said the percentage of private sector involvement (operational) in the power sector as at December 2013 was 15 per cent.
This was against 59 per cent that was the planned target by the Federal Government for the period under review.
He said, “The actual amount of electricity generation capacity added by private sector as at December 2013 was 1,546MW. The planned target for 2013 was 1,755MW.”
Igali noted that the average number of power availability in 2013 was 16.34 hours as against the 12 to 16 hours target set by the Federal Government last year.
According to the permanent secretary, the planned target for installed capacity in 2013 was 11,781MW while the actual value at the end of the year was 9,920.4MW.
He noted that the capacity of electricity delivered during the same period was 4,517.6MW as against 5,313MW, while 15 system collapses were recorded in contrast to 10 that were targeted.
“The development shows that we had an average of 1.25 system collapses per month as at the end of last year and this was against the 0.83 that was the planned target,” Igali added.
The average blended cost of electricity per kilowatt hour to power consumers was N17.47 as at December 2013. The planned target, according to the Federal Government, was N21.7.
Igali told the visiting permanent secretaries that it was the mission of the power ministry to provide the nation with adequate and reliable power supply by implementing generation, transmission and distribution projects in the sector.
According to him, this would facilitate the emergence of a private sector led competitive and efficient power industry.
He said, “It is our mandate to develop and facilitate the implementation of policies for the provision of adequate and reliable power supply to drive the socio-economic development of the nation.”
In his address, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Bukar Goni, said the peer review mechanism was initiated to access how permanent secretaries of the various ministries were managing their respective workforce.
“This is because only proper management can guarantee peaceful working environment,” he said.
