WTO seeks transparency in Nigeria’s trade policies

The World Trade Organisation has called on the Federal Government to ensure transparency and inclusiveness in the formulation and implementation process of the country’s trade policies.

The Deputy Director-General, WTO, Ambassador Yonov Agah, stated this on Saturday, in Abuja at a dinner organised in his honour by the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission.

Agah, who is the first Nigerian to rise to the position in the 157-member trade organisation, stated that transparency in trade policy formulation and implementation would help to ensure ownership by all stakeholders.

He said while the WTO would continue to pay special attention to both its development and negotiating objectives, there was a need for government at all levels to prioritise governance in the area of trade policies.

Agah said, “I believe that Nigeria will join other members in productive partnership that will enhance its benefits from the WTO and the multilateral trading system, especially with respect to economic growth, job creation and poverty alleviation.

“A good starting point may be prioritising trade policy governance and the mainstreaming of trade policy in our national development strategies.”
