Electricity consumers owe N41.5bn to KEDC

The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) said the consumers owed the company N41.5 billion electricity bills. The KEDC Managing Director, Malam Mohammed Idris, said that N40 billion was owed by the consumers in 2013, while N1.5 billion had accrued as debts from Jan. 1 to date.

Idris told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna that the indebted customers included those in Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto serviced by the company. He said that measures were being worked out to ensure that the debt was recovered before new investors would take over the company. The managing director said that the debt figure would have been more if not for measures adopted by the company in getting the customers to pay bills.

According to him, in January 2013 when we came in, the response rate of customers to our bills was about 35 per cent, but as I speak with you today, we have increased to 52 per cent and it shows that we are making progress.He said that the consumers’ debt profile had remained high in spite of increased efforts by the company to recover it.

Idris said that majority of the defaulting customers were residential consumers, “who consume about three-quarters of energy available in the area”.The managing director, however, said that the company was more concerned with improving power distribution in the area in 2014, and sued for cooperation of all electricity consumers in the area.
