Lagos Assembly passes consumer protection bill
The Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) on Tuesday passed a bill to protect consumers’ rights.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Consumer Protection Bill was passed into law after its third reading at a plenary session of the House.
Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji sponsored the bill.
He thanked the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Public complaints and Petitions, Mr Sanai Agunbiade, for efforts to ensure that the bill was passed into law.
“Let me thank Agunbiade that, for the first time in the history of the country, we have a law to protect consumers.
“We have been on it since the 5th assembly.
“It is a thing of joy for me because it has been my dream to have this law in place.
“The executive arm and some non-governmental organisations made very useful inputs.
“The bill is to be sent to Gov. Babatunde Fashola for assent,” he said.
NAN reports that, when signed into law, the bill will, among other things, protect the rights of consumers against marketing of hazardous goods and services.
