Taxation: Lagos government captures additional 1.1 million adults

Lagos State government said 1.1 million additional adults have been captured into the state’s tax net, increasing the number of tax payers to 4.2 million.

It will be recalled that the state government, last year, said that the number of taxpayers in the state had increased from the previous figure of 2.7 million to 3.1 million, adding that it resulted into a six per cent revenue growth for the state.

Chairman of Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Babatunde Fowler, who disclosed this in an interview with Vanguard, said that the “ratio of tax payers in the state is increasing daily.”

This came barely few days after the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola said that 70 per cent of the current budget would be financed through tax and levies collected in the state especially through LIRS.

Fowler said: “We now have 4.2 million adults in our tax net. And this testifies to the fact that the residents can now see the importance of paying tax through various projects that have been embarked upon by the state government.

“We just want to encourage more Lagosians, especially women who haven’t started paying taxes to start immediately. And those that have been paying should continue to do so.

“We want to appeal to some women who call themselves house-wives and who don’t pay tax, to start paying taxes.”

On the ratio of those who pay taxes in the state, Fowler said: “Those who are paying taxes have improved tremendously. I have just given you the right figure that about 70 per cent of Lagosians are complying with the payment of taxes.”
