Investors trade two billion shares in four days

A turnover of 2 billion shares worth N15.907 billion in 17,378 deals were traded within four days in the course of last week by investors on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, in contrast to a total of 1.278 billion shares valued at N6.897 billion that exchanged hands the previous week in 10,761 deals.

Information gathered from the Exchange indicated that the Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 1.551 billion shares valued at N7.547 billion traded in 9,244 deals, thus contributing 77.54% and 47.45% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The Oil and Gas Industry followed with a turnover of 208.046 million shares worth N3.116 billion in 2,439 deals.

The third place was occupied by the Conglomerates Industry with 105.277 million shares worth N476.146 million in 1,015 deals.

Trading in the top three equities namely, Sterling Bank Plc, Unity Bank Plc and NEM Insurance Plc(measured by volume) accounted for 811.497 million shares worth N1.183 billion in 1,100 deals, contributing 41.00% and 7.43% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

Also traded during the week were a total of 5 units of NewGold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) valued at N9,867.00 executed in 2 deals compared with a total of 50 units of NewGold valued at N92,600.00 that was transacted the previous week in 1 deal.

Likewise, 2,647 units of FGN bonds valued at N2.626 million were last week traded in 8 deals compared with a total of 100 units of FGN bonds valued at N108, 180.59 that was transacted the previous week in 1 deal.

A report on the over-the-counter(OTC) market for FGN bonds indicated that 1,030 million units valued at N425.079 million in 4 deals were recorded last week.

The NSE All-Share Index, ASI, appreciated by 1,218.80 points or 3.03 percent to close higher last Friday at 41,450.48 basis points when compared with the previous week’s closing figure of 40,231.68 basis points.

The Market Capitalisation of listed entities also appreciated by N390 billion or 3.03 percent to close last Friday at
N13.265 trillion as against the preceding week’s closing figure of N12.875 trillion.

All the other NSE indices also appreciated during the week.

The NSE 30 increased by 3.39% to close at 1,911.15 points, NSE Consumer Goods rose by 0.40% to close at 1,090.98 points, NSE Banking was up by 7.14% to close at 452.25 points, NSE Insurance rose by 6.51% to close at 159.65 points while the NSE Oil/Gas Index increased by 6.84% to close at 347.67 points

Also, NSE Lotus Islamic Index was up by 0.99% to close at 2,852.33 points, NSE Industrial Goods Index increased by 2.11% to close at 2,554.00 points and NSE-ASeM rose by 0.07% to close at 963.02 points.

Sixty six equities appreciated in prices during the week higher than Fifty eight equities of the preceding week.

Eighteen equities depreciated in prices higher than Eleven equities of the
preceding week while one hundred and fourteen equities remained unchanged lower than one hundred and twenty nine equities in the previous week.

Forte oil led the top ten losers chart for last week shedding N15.66k in its share price to close at N92.64k per share.

Conoil followed with a loss of N6.61k in its share price to close at N61.32k per share while Transcorp was third losing N0.33k in its share price to close at N4.28k per share.

Cadbury was fourth with a share price loss of N4.27k to close at N56.61k per share while Learn Africa was fifth with a loss of N0.13k in its share price to close at N1.94k per share.

Other companies on the chart are Courteville, Cornerstone Insurance, DN Meyer, John Holt and IPWA Plc.

However, Neimeth Pharmaceuticals led the gainers chart appreciating by N0.39k in its share price to close at N1.44k per share.

UBA Capital was second gaining N0.58k in its share price to close at N2.30k per share while Oando was third with a gain of N6.69k in its share price to close at N26.66k per share.

N.E.M Insurance was fourth with a share price loss of N0.21k to close at N0.89k while Africa Prudentials was fifth with a gain of N0.78k in its share price to close at N3.66k per share.

Japaul Oil, May & Baker, WAPIC, UBA and Eterna Plc were other companies on the chart.
