World Bank, states spend N46bn on community projects

The World Bank working in alliance with state governments and various communities across 26 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory spent over N46bn on community development projects between 2009 and November 2013.

The World Bank Country Director in Nigeria, Marie-Francois Marie-Nelly, disclosed this at the review meeting of the World Bank-assisted Community and Social Development Project in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to her, the CSDP is set to empower communities through access to basic social and natural services; strengthen partnerships between state government and communities; and improve the capacity of the Federal Government agencies to support and finance community initiated interventions.

Marie-Nelly said, “The CSDP, a follow-on to successful pilots of the Community Poverty Reduction Project and Local Empowerment and Environmental Management Project, started in 2009, with the International Development Association credit of $200m. The project development objective is to sustainably increase access of poor people to improved social and natural resource infrastructure services.

“Today, we are proud that the project has performed satisfactorily in 26 states and the FCT. The credit is over 99 per cent IDA disbursed. More than N46bn (about $290m) was expended to date on the CSDP, indicating about N14bn or $90m contribution from the government and the communities. This represents 31 per cent or almost one third of the resources.”
