NAMA advises operators on air safety measures

The Managing Director, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Mr. Nnamdi Udoh, on Monday in Lagos tasked African aviation experts to ensure safety precautions in their respective fields.

The NAMA boss said this while addressing participants at a three-day meeting of Inter-Flight Information Region coordination between Nigeria and her neighbours.

He also said that with the election of an African as the president of the civil aviation body, there was the need for experts from the continent to renew efforts in turning the continent’s airspace into one of the best in the world.

Udoh said with the growing figures of the African air travel industry, it was important for operators to take the issue of air safety precautions more seriously.

He said, “Figures show that the African air travel market has demonstrated a potential growth of about seven per cent, which makes it the highest in the world; therefore, this calls for a lot of increased effort on the part of all concerned bodies.

“It is our hope that aviation experts in Africa do their best to always strive for the best in their respective fields to ensure safety in the African skies.”

The participating Flight Information Regions at the meeting included Niamey, Libreville, Brazzaville, N’djamena, Doula, Accra and ASECNA Dakar.

Udoh explained that the meeting was intended to foster co-operation and harmony in the areas of inter-operability of systems between adjacent FIRs, seamlessness of flights between the FIRs and effective co-ordination within the region.

He explained that other issues of major concern were the challenges of coordination between the FIRs, cross-border search and rescue operations, and review of letters of agreement between contiguous FIRs.
