FG commissions 15MVA substation in Abuja

The federal government has commissioned a double 15MVA injection substation at Apo in Abuja as part of its projects to improve electricity distribution networks and adequate power supply across the country.
In his address, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Mr James Olotu, at the commissioning ceremony yesterday assured Nigerians of improved power supply saying, “with these distribution projects, we assure Nigerians that the power will get to our individual homes and businesses.”
Olotu also noted that four generation plants under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) are now completed. “Four of the NIPPs are ready for commissioning. We are just doing housekeeping work in order to make sure that everything is according to contract and they are able to produce the kind of power that Nigerians want,” Olotu said.
The NIPP Injection Substation has two working feeders out of the six-capacity feeder which the Abuja Distribution Company might be required to increase. The disco is also expected to connect the remaining four to its network to ensure that customers get stable power supply.
The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo  who commissioned the substation tasked the new owners of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), KANN Consortium, on optimal performance in enhancing power supply.
Nebo said: “For Abuja disco, we expect the best; we expect you will pick the leadership. Abuja is the first one, and we assure that we will have 24/7 power supply in the next few months and that is why all these projects are being commissioned.”
Earlier, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Senator Philip Aduda, expressed hope of improvement with the new substation.
Aduda tasked the minister on improving the operations and management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to ensure smooth operation among the stakeholders.
He said: “However honourable minister, we must also get our transmission right. We must ensure that those that are saddled with the responsibility of managing our transmission ensure they get it right.”
“We must look at the protocol between market operator, system operator, because recently, we did find out that there was some bit of teething problems and these are issues that we must move in to resolve,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of KANN Consortium and owner of Abuja Disco, Mr Neil Croucher has disclosed that six injection substations would be commissioned soon to further improve power supply in its electricity area.
He said: “Power is a long term business and that is our commitment to make sure we play our part in transforming electricity in this country.”
