Helicopter Business to Generate N96bn for Domestic Airlines

The Managing Director of Bristow Helicopters, Akin Oni has disclosed that helicopter business in the oil and gas sector would generate between N80 billion and N96 billion in 2014.
Speaking to journalists  at aviation safety seminar 2013  organised  in Lagos by Aero Consult recently, Oni said over 83 helicopters are operated by six companies in Nigeria.
He said there are over 200 onshore operational and non-operational helipads and 200 fixed and mobile offshore helidecks for helicopter operations.

According to him, helicopters provide quick and safe access for the oil and gas companies in their prospecting and production operations.
However, he added that helicopters are more susceptible to accidents than fixed wing aircraft and called on the operators to pay more attention to safety so as to remain in business.
He noted that oil and gas industry is the lifeblood of the Nigerian economy, contributing 90 per cent of export earnings and 40 per cent of government revenue

Oni linked the dwindling public confidence in the aviation sector to the myriads of accusations and counter accusations by industry players about crisis in the aviation sector.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Med View Airline,  Muneer  Bankole, said aviation sector desired to strengthen its pillars on safety.

He also advised operators, states, and individuals that all have roles to play within the concentric circle and a failure in any one part is a failure of the whole, stressing that “safety is everybody business.”
