$50m JICA loan will be judiciously spent – Tambuwal

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday said that Nigeria would not misuse the $50m loan the Japan International Cooperation Agency had offered the country to fight polio.

Tambuwal spoke in Abuja during a visit to his office by Microsoft founder and Co-chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates, and the Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

Gates had explained that the loan was primarily to fight polio and other childhood killer diseases.

The speaker gave an assurance to the visitors that the relevant committees of the House would ensure a proper application of the money.

Tambuwal also told them that the National Assembly would make provisions for a counterpart funding for the programme in the 2014 budget.

He said, “I listened to your address particularly on the JICA loan and I assure you that at the House of Representatives, we will do all that is required of us to ensure that when that proposal is forwarded to the National Assembly, we will pass it so that Nigeria can assess the loan that will now support the obtaining of the vaccines that will advance the drive for the eradication of polio.”

Gates had earlier informed Tambuwal that fighting polio was the major aim of his foundation.

He expressed concern over security challenges, which he said had slowed down the work of vaccination teams.
