SON meets electrical dealers over substandard bulbs

Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) will be meeting with the Electrical Dealers Association of Nigeria and the General Electrical Dealers Association at the Alaba International Market in Lagos on Saturday.

Dr. Joseph Ikem Odumodu, Director-General SON, told Vanguard on Tuesday, that the purpose of the meeting is to sensitise the stakeholders on “The effect of substandard electric bulbs on the Nigerian economy.”

He said the meeting is part of the agency’s activities to mark this year’s World Standards Day in Nigeria.

Odumodu said that this year’s World Standards Day with the theme: “International Standards Ensure Positive Change”, is coordinated by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), International Electro technical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

“Standards support economic growth in developing countries like Nigeria by outlining best practices that enable them to avoid “reinventing the wheel,” he said.

He stressed that standards are becoming increasingly important in helping cities develop more intelligent and sustainable infrastructures and making them better places to live.

According to him, international standards in addition to ensuring that products, services and environments become more accessible to persons with disabilities are also applied as tools to help reduce climate change by improving energy efficiency, decreasing waste as well as Green House gas emissions.

They share best practices in renewable energy generation, provide cutting edge requirements and processes for waste disposal and recycling as well as tools to enhance efficiency and environmental sustainability across all industry sectors, said the Director General.

Dr. Odumodu stated that his organisation as the representative of these international standardisation bodies in Nigeria has the responsibility and has continued to propagate these global standards through adoption and adaptation for local use in all sectors, trainings, seminars, workshops, consumer enlightenment activities and the certification of products, systems and processes to internationally acclaimed standards.
