SON claims receipt of 26% of capital vote

By on September 27, 2013

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria on Wednesday said it had only received 26 per cent of its capital vote for the 2013 fiscal period.

The Director-General, SON, Dr. Joseph Odumodu, gave out the figure when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Industry, who visited the agency in Abuja on oversight function.

The committee was led by its chairman, Mr. Mohammed Onawo.

The House, which resumed last week after being on vacation for about two months, had adjourned for one week to enable its various committees to carry out an oversight on the agencies they were supervising.

This, according to findings, was to enable them see the level of implementation of the 2013 Appropriation Act.

The revelation is coming about nine months into the implementation of the budget and with just three months to the end of the 2013 fiscal year.

It is also coming less than a week after the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said that N850bn had so far been released as capital votes for the implementation of various projects by Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government.

The minister had last week claimed that of the N850bn released for the first, second and third quarter capital projects, about 76 per cent had been utilised by the MDAs.

But Odumodu said while 87 per cent of SON’s overhead budget had been released, such could not be said of the capital votes.

He said, “In terms of government subventions, we have so far received 87 per cent of our overheads as of the end of August.”
