Obi pledges to make Anambra community centre of agriculture

The Anambra State government has initiated partnership with a continental farming group, Songhai System Africa to develop Integrated Agricultural project at Urum, Awka North Local Government Area.

Governor Peter Obi who disclosed this while inspecting facilities at the farm said Urum would grow to become the centre of excellence in Agriculture.

He said that the farm would be supported in view of the appropriateness of Urum for such a project.

Governor Obi said the project was part of the State government programmes to fight hunger and extreme poverty in the drive to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

He explained that the project would cover all facets of Agriculture including farming, poultry and fishery, among others with huge potential for creating employment opportunities and revenue generation.

The Governor noted that the project, which would take five hectares of land, was already yielding fruits with over 70 direct workers employed in the farm and with key facilities also in place.

The Chief Executive officer of the Songhai Farms, Reverend Father Godfrey Nzeamujo said the system would bring innovation that would create value at all levels of agriculture and reverse the prevailing trend of exporting huge agricultural raw materials to developed countries.

Nzeamujo explained that the process would include primary and secondary production, processing and storage as well as skill development that would among other things ensure food security and create synergy with other sectors to attract the youth, diversify the economy and tackle challenges of social security.

The Director of the Farm, Reverend Father Sabastine Anokwulu said the state government intervention had fast tracked the growth and advancement of the farm.

He disclosed that the farm already had market for its produce.
