NCC probes claims of operators frustrating number porting
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it is investigating claims that telecom operators are frustrating efforts by subscribers to port from one network to the other.
NCC’s Director Public Relations, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Tony Ojobo, who disclosed this on a live television programme on Tuesday, said the allegation is yet unsubstantiated.
He said the commission has set up a Mobil Number Portability implementation committee “to resolve all issues arising from the implementation of the MNP across all the networks. Of course when such complaints come, it is turned into the committee to look at it and find out what actually happened. In the committee you have all of the parties: you have the clearing house, who serves as the administrator, you have the networks and you have the regulator”.
He warned that where “there is a deliberate obstruction of a porting request, that particular operator would be a sanctioned.”
Meanwhile, he assured that many GSM subscribers have ported from one network to another since MNP began on April 24, 2013, in exercise of their freedom of choice to hire and fire their operators at will.
According to him, industry statistics for the Months of May and June shows that a total of 13,923 subscribers ported from one network to another.
Specifically, he continued, 7,164 subscribers ported in May, dropping to 5,759 last month, with MTN receiving 10 per cent of the total number in May, and nine per cent in June, as against 17 per cent for Glo, and 29 per cent in June.
Airtel received 29 per cent ported into the network in May, and 12 per cent on June; while Etisalat got 44 per cent porting into its network in May and 50 percent in June.
