Oke re-elected AAAN president; preaches ethics, professionalism
Advertising agency owners and other Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN) stakeholders have been urged to contribute their quota towards the growth and development of the Nigerian advertising industry.
Bunmi Oke was re-elected president of the association for a second term in office at the 40th anniversary of the association’s annual general meeting (AGM) and congress which held at the Obasanjo Library, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The event was formally declared open by the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
Oke, the second woman to lead the forty year old association was elected unopposed at the business session of the AGM.
In her acceptance speech, Oke said her administration would not only consolidate on the gains of the last year but would uphold ethical practice and professionalism in the conduct of marketing communications business.
Oke, who is also the chief operating officer of 141 Worldwide, is optimistic that her second tenure will deliver good fortune to all stakeholders in the advertising industry.
While welcoming delegates at the event, Oke expressed happiness that at the role the association had continued to play to enthrone creative excellence and growth of Nigeria and global advertising industry and economy at large.
She stated that the gathering was to take a bold step in shaping the profession that has made them noble people in their various communities.
While enumerating the importance of advertising Oke, said as experts in communications of ideas and values, she said advertising is a major plank through which government can reach out and touch the hearts of the generality of Nigerians and so carry the populace along in its march towards true national development.
“Governments all over the world have retained the services of professional marketing communication outfits to sell their policies. In the same vein, it is pertinent to acknowledge the role some AAAN member agencies played in the nation’s growth and development.
She said advertising agency role in national development goes beyond offering marketing communication services to the private sector but rather extends to fully engendering proper understanding of government policies and revealing to the public ways by which they can participate, benefit and contribute to the growth of the economy.
“We have driven the economy fairly well in the past years.” she said with confidence. “Our members have successfully built and managed brands that are of international repute. We have contributed our quota to the development of the Nigerian economy.”
She implored members to harness their knowledge, views, perception and experiences and channel them through effective and productive contributions towards the realisation of the objectives of the association.
The event featured the induction of new members of the association. The Ikeja, Lagos based X3M Ideas agency was formally inducted into the association with an official seal of office to practice advertising in Nigeria. While making the presentation Oke urged the leadership of the X3M Ideas not to relent in their pursuit. She urged them to uphold professionalism and ethics in the conduct of their businesses.
In response, X3M Ideas chief creative officer, Mr. Steve Babaeko said “It feels great to be a member of the Advertising Agencies Association of Nigeria (AAAN). Personally, it shows that we are in compliance with all the laws that govern the industry. Now that everything is in place, we can continue with our business of breaking all creative rules by developing X3Mly interesting concepts for our clients.”
