NUPENG/PENGASSAN threatens strike

Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN and National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG have threatened to embark on an industrial action following the poor state of the Eleme-Refinery raod.

This was made known by NUPENG and PENGASSAN workers during a peaceful protest staged today in Port Harcourt to call the Federal Government’s attention on the need to repair the road.

Speaking to DailyPost in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state Chairman of Trade Union Congress,TUC, and the Industrial Relations Officer of PENGASSAN, Comrade Chika Onuegbu lamented the ordeals of the workers that ply the road.

He said the workers are tired of going through the collapsed road, affirming that it is the federal government’s responsibility to give the road some attention since it is a federal road.

“We are protesting because the Eleme-refinery road is one of the most important roads in the country. It is the road that leads to the Petrochemical company. It is the road that leads to Eleme refinery and the road that leads to Onne port. Our workers spend over 4 hours to and fro just on that road. Meanwhile, this is a federal road. The federal government is expected to fill the road to avoid causing more loss of time on the road,” he said.

Comrade Onuegbu emphasized that the workers will take series of actions including embarking on strike to protest the situation. He also decried the fact that some parts of the state have been sequestered from the state capital owing to the bad road.

“We are not even talking of the fact that some sections of Rivers people have been cut off. We believe that we owe ourselves a duty to protest and let the federal government know that they should pay attention to the road, otherwise we will embark on an industrial action.”
