UNN, UNESCO science fair opens today

In furtherance of its pursuit for excellence, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, in collaboration with UNESCO, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics,ICTP, Engineers Without Borders,EWB, and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry,IUPAC, is to hold a science fair at the institution.

The fair, which holds between Monday, June 17 to June 21 shall feature Scientific Mobile Learning Training Workshop, Micro-Science and global water experiment, scientific, and Engineering without Borders outreach training for science teachers and students.

According to a statement signed by the UNN communication secretary, Mr. Gabriel Ndu, the exercise is targeted at University Academic, science teachers in secondary schools and their students,and students of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

He said: “The UNESCO-ICTP Mobile-Learning, programme was developed by ICTP Science Dissemination Unit and first mounted in Trieste in 2012.

“The training at Nsukka is the first time it is being mounted in Africa. It is targeted to guide academic staff in developing countries to be conversant with potentials of the newest mobile educational possibilities and the creation of scientific contents for mobile devices.

“The programme offers a balanced mix of technical details, general overview, societal impact and a sense of possibility with ‘Scientific Mobile Learning’.

The training will accommodate 100 members of the academic staff and will be held at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium of the UNN”.

Ndu continued that the UNESCO-IUPAC Micro-Science and global water experiment was also designed to offer secondary school students the opportunity to conduct practical works in physics, chemistry and biology, using kits that come with booklets describing the experiments.

“The kits, which are veritable mini-laboratories that are compact, affordable and can be reused, were developed by UNESCO in the late 1990s within the framework of International Basic Science Programme.

The exercise will accommodate 85 secondary school science teachers and 140 secondary school students”, he stated.
