TCN wants excavators to stay off its installations

The management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria has warned individuals and groups involved in sand excavation around the New Haven-Otukpo 132KV transmission line towers at Opi-Nsukka, Enugu State, to desist from the act or prepare to face the full weight of law and other consequences.

The tower numbers are T142, T143 and T144.

The TCN General Manager (Transmission), Enugu Region, Mr. Ikechukwu Onumonu, gave this warning on Thursday, while inspecting transmission towers endangered by indiscriminate excavation of sand around bases in Opi-Nsukka area of the state.

Onumonu said, “The affected high tension tower foundations are being threatened seriously by these unwarranted and dangerous activities.”

He added, “A collapse of a single high tension tower usually give way to collapse of other towers especially those closer to it, leading to loss of lives and very long time of power outages in the area affected.”

The TCN boss also emphasised the huge cost of re-erecting a single collapsed tower.

He, therefore, appealed to government agencies and the general public to work together and stop the excavators, who he described as enemies of the people and government, from continuing their wicked acts.
