Jang tells ANAN to re-examine, re-evaluate accounting Code of Conduct in the country

Jonah-JangThe Plateau State Governor, Dr. Jonah Jang has called for the re-examination and re-evaluation of the Code of Conduct of the accounting profession in the country, decrying that most corrupt practices in the country are either perpetrated or facilitated by accountants.

He disclosed this in Jos at the second session of the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme ,MCPD, 2013 of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria,ANAN.

According to the Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Mr. Ignatius Longjan, “I am however, concerned that despite the increase in professionalism and the existence of a strict Code of Conduct of the accounting profession, the level of fraud and corruption in the society has not reduced significantly. It is sad that some acts of corruption are perpetrated or facilitated by accountants.

Adding that, “This calls for a re-examination and re-evaluation of the system in order to get to the root of the problem.

He urged the participants to maximize the benefits of the training for the good of the profession and the society as a whole.

Earlier in an address, ANAN President, Alhaji Sakirudeen Labode said the training and retraining of members are important aspects of
professional development for job efficiency, effectiveness, and leadership skill acquisition.

He said the programme was ensure that all accounting professionals identify the challenges encountered in implementing the international financial reporting standards, and proffering solutions on how best to overcome those challenges.

He further asserted that, the association was working with other government agencies to adopt fraud prevention mechanism, using “whistle blowing” and protection for the “whistle blower”.

Affirming that “It is a fundamental mechanism in reducing the incidence of corporate corruption approach to the barest minimum in our country”
