Federal Government to sanction airline for non-scheduled flights

The Federal Government has announced that it plans to sanction airline operators who engage in non-scheduled flights, pick up of passengers for local and international flight without appropriate clearances from relevant government agencies henceforth.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, Anne Ene-Ita read the riot act at a stormy session of representatives of various airlines in Abuja during an interactive session with officials of the ministry of aviation.

According to Ms Anne, government has strengthened the monitoring of non-scheduled flights flying into or overflying Nigeria for safety and security reasons.

She said the Federal Government will no longer tolerate the excesses of the airline operators.

Reacting to the new policy, representatives of the airline operators criticised the Federal Government for alleged attempts to stifle the growth of the industry.

The acting Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the aide to President Jonathan however explained that the revised policy is aimed at enhancing the growth of the industry.

Ms Anne reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government to meet the demands of aviation master plan and the national civil aviation policy in accordance with international standards and recommended practices as the revised aviation policy may remain a contentious issue as aviation players decry alleged bureaucracy in the sector.
