Abuja Airport to begin digital tolling

As a means of addressing security threats to air travellers, the Federal Government has concluded plans to use digital toll gates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Our  correspondent gathered on Sunday that the digital toll gate service would come on stream by the end of May.

It was also learnt that the digital gates, which will be managed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, in partnership with First Bank Nigeria Plc and private firm, would ensure efficiency and accountability at the airport.

The spokesperson, FAAN, Abuja airport, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, said, “The automated service became imperative to plan against insecurity as well as ensure transparency in the collection of fare at the airport entrance.”

According to Yakubu, the development is part of the transformation agenda of the present administration, adding that, “people will no longer stand there collecting N200.”

She said, “There will be a bar at the entrance. If they don’t put the correct amount of money or a chip, as the case may be, the bar will not lift. I can confirm to you that it is something that will take place very soon.

“We are planning to go on air to educate members of the public on this because there is nowhere in the world where people park to pay money at airports. It will not only speed up the process, but will boost security at the airport.”

Speaking on other reasons the airports authority decided to initiate the new measure, Yakubu said FAAN had been losing huge sums of money to motorists, amidst other illegalities.
