FG prioritises Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Second Niger Bridge

The Federal Government has said it will give priority to the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the building of the Second Niger Bridge that will connect Delta and Anambra states.

The government’s position was made known by the Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Onolememen, according to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Works, said the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway would be expanded into a four-lane carriageway with the construction of a fly-over.

He added that the Second Niger Bridge would be constructed with an additional 39-kilometre dual carriageway along the Onitsha-Enugu axis.

Onolememen, while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, said, “There are many other projects, but for now, the ministry is prioritising these two key projects.”

He explained that the ministry would partner the NSIA on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the additional 39-kilometre road linking the Second Niger Bridge.

The NSIA team was led by its Managing Director, Mr. Uche Orji.

The minister stated that the ministry would continue to collaborate with the organisation in developmental projects across the country, stressing that the government was working tirelessly to ensure the roads were constructed in record time.

The PUNCH had exclusively reported that the government had temporarily shifted focus on other road projects due to its resolve to construct the Second Niger Bridge.

It was also learnt that the four road contracts with a combined value of N10bn that were revoked by the government might not be attended to in due course.
