Transparency International denies ‘Transparency in Nigeria’

Transparency International, a global body against corruption, has denied that Transparency in Nigeria, TIN, is affiliated to it.

This is the second time in two years that the body is issuing such rebuttal.

Established in 1994, TIN describes itself as the Nigerian chapter of TI.

In 2011, TI first barred TIN for what it described as “its failure to comply with TI’s National Chapter Accreditation Policy.”

Last week, TIN published a report titled ‘Budget Discipline Perception Index,BDPI, 2012/2013’.

The report released by a Kano based journalist, Abba Anwar, ranked Nigerian states on budget discipline.

It named Kano State as the most budget disciplined state.

A statement by TI read in part: “Transparency International has no links with an organisation calling itself Transparency in Nigeria,TIN,” The organisation said in a release on Friday. “Transparency International has no links with Transparency in Nigeria, nor does it currently have an affiliate in Nigeria.”

The global body says it has written to TIN to stop using its brand name and logo.
