Power transmission: FG requests Poland’s help

By on April 12, 2013

The Federal Government has asked Poland to assist in the development of the weak electricity transmission lines in Nigeria.

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said the government was interested in Polish expertise in the areas of power transmission, noting that the existing lines in the country were weak.

“Hence, we ask Poland to help develop our evacuation of power capacities,” he said.

Nebo, according to a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday, said this while hosting a Polish delegation at the Power ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

He explained that the ministry would need the services of Polish power experts in the electrification of rural communities, adding that the government was working tirelessly to address existing power challenges in the country.

Nebo said, “It is impossible to get the super grid to all rural communities. We will like to engage with your various entities to build small power holdings that would provide electricity to the rural populace.

“We are also prepared to explore Polish assistance in metering, in conjunction with our regulatory body, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.”

The Presidential Task Force on Power had state in February stated that the transmission infrastructure remained the weakest link in the electricity supply chain,

The PTFP, in a review of the power reform roadmap of 2012, said the transmission infrastructure was being challenged continuously, adding that the gap between the generation capacity and available power in the grid was dissimilar.

Nebo, however, observed that another problematic area in the power sector was capacity building.

“We can really begin to forge a linkage with your technical universities,” he told the Polish delegation.

The minister said, “We need to develop a versatile capacity in the power sector. We also have opportunities for Polish manufacturers and investors to come in either as Independent Power Producers or in partnerships.
