Nigeria needs N360billion to provide potable water to the country – Minister

The Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Ochekpe had on Thursday stated that an estimated N360 billion would be required for Nigerians to begin to enjoy potable water from now till 2015.

Ochepke however told the party that about 20 dams are near completion stage as part of efforts to improve water supply for human and agricultural needs in the country.

She listed some of the dams to be located in Katsina, Imo, Kaduna, Akwa Ibom and Sokoto States.

She said, “from what is on ground and the level of resources committed to the development of water resources, the government of President Goodluck Jonathan is on course to be returned to power in 2015”.

She noted that the recently held presidential summit on water, where various stakeholders were invited to deliberate, was part of President Jonathan’s commitment to improve water supply in the country.

She said the summit was already producing results as “the Ministry has got invitations from several countries seeking to share ideas on how they too could organize such summit”.

In the same vein, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mohammed Sada, said the ministry had a target of developing coal as fuel for coal-fired power plants, thereby contributing 30 per cent of power generation by 2015.

The Ministers stated this while presenting their records of stewardship before the leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, led by its national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

The party had invited federal ministers from Tuesday, April 9, 2013 to Thursday, May 30, 2013 to brief the party on how they have been meeting the transformation agenda of the party. The minister of works, Mike Onulememen, briefed the party leadership last Tuesday.
