Nigeria loses 1,112MW to Chevron gas plant shutdown

Nigeria’s minister of power, Prof Chinedu Nebo, yesterday disclosed that the country had lost a total of 1,112MW power supply to the ongoing maintenance work in the sector.

This revelation is contrary to the previous announcement by the Presidential Task Force on Power (PTFP) that 800MW would be lost to the shutdown of the Chevron gas plant for routine maintenance last week.

Nebo who addressed a press conference in Abuja said the development is responsible for the sharp decline in power supply experienced in the country over the last couple of days.

The Minister said as a result of the plants shutdown, Egbin, Omotosho and Olorunshogo power plants were all forced to shutdown due to the fact that their gas supply comes from the shut plant.

He stated that at the moment, power supply had gone up to 3,400MW adding that it would reach 4,000MW by tomorrow (today) as the recovery continues to progress.

He said: “With regards to occasional system failures, some of these things are not entirely unavoidable, we are in the process of reviving huge sections of our transmission, especially the lines that are aged, ailing, dilapidated and in need of replacement. From time to time there is going to be shutdown, because if you don’t shutdown these plants to have a safe restarting process you will lose the equipment”.
