Taskforce begins patrol of BRT lanes with cameras today

Worried by the alleged constant abuse of dedicated BRT lanes by private vehicles and military personnel, the Lagos Taskforce on Environment and Special Offence Enforcement Unit will today begin monitoring of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes with cameras.

The state government has, therefore, initiated move to prosecute erring motorists, just as it provided four patrol vans and digital cameras to capture images of erring vehicles and arrest traffic offenders.

Speaking with National Mirror, the task force chairman, Mr. Bayo Sulaiman, said that the government initiated the move to curb constant abuse of the BRT lane.

Sulaiman, however, said 30 hoodlums and three traders were arrested at the weekend in Ketu and Iyana-Ipaja area of the state for constituting nuisance.

He said the hoodlums were arrested following a tip-off by members of the public, adding that the traders’ goods were also confiscated.

Sulaiman said: “Although we carry out our routine raid on daily basis, but these boys are said to be responsible for robbery and raping in Tipper Garage and Iyana-Ipaja area. Henceforth, we shall continue to raid those trouble spots. You will recall that we just arrested those terrorising unsuspecting commuters in Oshodi. We will not rest until crime is fully curtailed in Lagos”.

He added that those arrested would be arraigned in court.

According to the task force chairman, the confiscated goods are perishable and would be given to the Orphanage Homes and charity organisations.

On the motorists who ply the dedicated BRT lanes, Sulaiman stressed that with the new strategy, it would be difficult for any traffic offender to escape prosecution.
