Senate orders Aero Contractors to recall 650 sacked workers

The Management of Aero Contractors had on Thursday, been directed by the Senate to withdraw the dismissal letters issued to members of its staff.

This directive was given by the Senate Committee on Aviation, at a meeting with the Management of Aero, urging the unions in the aviation sector and other stakeholders to intervene in the on-going industrial dispute in the airline.

It would be recalled that the Management of Aero Contractors, on March 13th, dismissed 650 workers, a move that prompted an industrial action by the workers.

The industrial action has since crippled the services of the private airline.

At the meeting, the Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Mr. Obaru Ibru explained that the airline had recalled three hundred of the dismissed staff, but the Chairman of the committee on aviation, Senator Hope Uzodinma, maintained that the workers should not have been dismissed in the first place.

Commenting on the outcome of the crucial meeting, Senator Uzodinma said that the airlines’ management agreed to recall all sacked staff and thereafter conduct an appraisal in three weeks. It was further resolved that affected staff who do not meet the requirement as stipulated by Aero Contractors would be laid off and paid their severance entitlements.
