Sale of pre-registered sim cards: NCC team hands over telecom agent to police in Enugu

An enforcement team of the Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC, on Wednesday handed over an agent of a telecom operator (name withheld) to the police for violating sim card registration rule.

The exercise was carried out in Enugu by the NCC team from Abuja in collaboration with the South-East zone of the office.

Mr. Idehe Efosa, head of NCC enforcement, who led the team said it was aimed at ensuring strict compliance to the commission’s guidelines.

“The NCC gave an operational guideline to all the telecom operators, which is that no pre-registered sim card should be sold, but as I speak to you, some agents still fraudulently sale pre-registered sim cards.

“I think they do that to increase their subscriber base, but that’s not the important thing, what matters is the quality of network”, he said.

Efosah, while lamenting the involvement of all the service providers in the illegality, noted that “they mess up our data base through such act.

“Whatever the case, we shall get to them, it takes time but we shall definitely win the war.

“Unless the operators begin to see why they should collaborate with us, it will get to them soon”.

On the case of Miss Sani, who was arrested during the enforcement, he said the suspect would be handed over to the police for discreet investigation.

“Well, she is still a suspect, from here we are going straight to hand her over to the police; they will prosecute her after investigations”, he stated.

Meanwhile, when interviewed, the 28 years old girl denied any involvement in illegal sale of sim cards.

According to her: “I don’t sell any pre-registered sim card, I’m an agent working with a telecom operator and I sell sim cards to people before registering it. I don’t know why they arrested me”.
