Oil spills: Shell agrees to complete remediation of sites

Anglo-Dutch oil giants, Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, has agreed to complete the remediation of oil spill sites created by the operations of the company in Ejama and Bomu areas of the state.

This was revealed in a statement yesterday by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment, Senator Bukola Saraki.

The former Kwara State governor added that Shell has committed itself to complete the remediation process before the end of 2013 and that this has been communicated to the senate committee via a letter of assurance from the company.

“After the public hearing the Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology had with Shell Petroleum on January 30, 2013, on the way forward to clean-up the spills and the commencement of proper remediation of oil spill sites, the committee is delighted to receive a letter of reassurance of commitment from Shell, that they will complete the remediation of Ejama and Bomu manifold oil spill sites in 2013,” the statement read.

Saraki on behalf of the senate committee on environment acknowledged the commitment and effort of the Shell management for charting a new course by reassuring the senate committee and Nigerians that it will re-mediate these sites. The committee assured Nigerians of their relentless effort at ensuring that other oil spill sites in the Niger Delta gets due attention and remain oil spill-free.
