NCC sanctions mobile operators with N22m fine

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC has penalized four GSM operators for flouting the law prohibiting promotions and lotteries on their respective networks. The affected companies are to pay N22million for contravening NCC’s new regulatory order.

The affected operators are; MTN Nigeria, Etisalat Nigeria, Airtel and Globacom.

A statement issued by Reuben Muoka, NCC Head of Media & Public Relations, said “Four mobile service providers, Airtel Networks, Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services (Etisalat), Globacom and MTN Communications Nigeria, are to pay a total sum of N22, 000,000 being the cumulative amount in sanctions for contravening the ban on promotions and lotteries in their respective networks as placed by the Commission”.

Details of the fines show that MTN is to pay N10, 000,000 on account of five promotions at N2, 000,000 for each promotion. Etisalat on the other hand is to pay N6, 000,000 for three promotions in its network”

While, Airtel is to pay N4, 000,000 for running two promotions against the ban, Globacom will pay N2, 000,000 for one promotion.

According to the statement, all operators have just seven days to pay their respective fines, beginning from the date of receipt of the sanction notice The statement also said and are liable to pay an additional sum of N1 million for any day that the contravention persists.

The Commission had in a letter, dated November 8 2012, directed all GSM operators to discontinue all promotions and lotteries running on their networks with immediate effect.

The Commission is responsible for creating enabling environment for competition among operators in the industry, as well as ensuring the provision of qualitative and efficient telecommunications services throughout the country.
