South-East summit targets N50 billion MDGs support trust fund

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Minister for Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okojo-Iweala, are among other personalities in the South-East expected to participate in a-two day summit in Owerri Imo state where the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) projects cited in the zone since the year 2000 would be assessed.
Anyim would deliver a keynote speech at the event scheduled to take place at Ikemba Ojukwu Centre, Owerri, Imo State on the 20th-21st February, 2013.
The summit is a concluding part of an earlier evaluation of the impact of MDGs projects in the South-East communities in the past thirteen years.
Organized by the Nigeria Union of Union Journalists (NUJ), South East Zone in Collaboration with the Department of Public Administration and Local Government Studies, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), and the Global Research and Development Ltd, the summit will equally feature the inauguration of board of trustees and launching of N50 billion MDGs support trust fund for communities in the zone.
The Fund so realized would be distributed to all South-East communities to tackle areas of MDGs critical attention identified by the research in areas of water bore-holes, health, education and poverty alleviation.
A statement from the organizers, Mr. Chris Isiguzo, for the NUJ and Prof. Fab Onah, on behalf of UNN, also urged all South-East stakeholders to ensure that one person represented their community at the summit, as such participant would become their community Project Liaison Officer.
On how the N50 billion would be realized, the organizers said “It is expected that 5 million Igbo Nationals at home and in Diaspora will be mobilized to make willing donation of N10, 000 or 100 Dollars per person in one year”.
