Former ExxonMobil workers protest cuts in terminal benefits

Disengaged workers of ExxonMobil at Qua Iboe Terminal in Akwa Ibom on Thursday protested over alleged cuts in their terminal benefits and described the action as unacceptable.

The 1,400 disengaged junior workers protested on some streets in Eket and carried placards to draw public attention to their plight. The Secretary, Sacked Janitorial Staff in ExxonMobil locations, Aniefiok Ekong, criticised the oil company for slashing their terminal benefits contrary to agreed terms.

“As we speak, our leaders have been summoned to Abuja over the matter. We also observed that the names of some of our members are missing on the list that Mobil pasted at the terminal.

“Even the amount of money paid to those whose names are on the list was a far cry from what is stated on the agreement. We are on the streets to say that we will not be part of this. We want the payment suspended until our leaders find out the reason why the management of the company reneged on the collective bargaining agreement with NUPENG,” Ekong said.

One of the affected workers, Felix Nnorom, said that the terminal benefits offered the workers ranged from N150, 000 to N270, 000 for those who had served from 15 years to 20 years.
Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), an affiliate of US oil firm ExxonMobil, outsources its labour needs to community contractors, who provide the work force required by the oil firm for its operations.
