Budget: Senate Committee approves N1.6b for NAPEP

The National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) is to work with N1.6billion this year.

The Chairman Committee on National Planning, Economic Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation, Senator Barnabas Gemade who spoke in Abuja on Wednesday, said his committee has approved N1.6billion budget for NAPEP.

Gemade assured NAPEP of his committee’s readiness to stand by it to uphold its people oriented programmes.

In his words, Gemade said, “The Committee is concerned about the plight of poor Nigerians who voted to have their condition of life improved, but unfortunately much is still being expected from government after coming this far.

“Poverty alleviation programmes should not be subjected to undue delays arising from prolonged procurement processes, which means the funds meant for the poor people should be effectively and speedily delivered.

Reacting to the development, The Senior Special Assistant to the President and National Coordinator, NAPEP, Malam Mukhtar Abubakar Tafawa Balewa said the agency has been excellent in executing its target programs, saying that in 2012 the agency met its target and even more should be expected.

The committee however, called on NAPEP to bring forward a supplementary budget estimate for consideration.

    9ija is finish, just 1.6billion naira to be use 2 fight porverty? i still ask my ppl who is fooling who? u r spending more than 16billion 2 build vicpresident house, were by u r spending 1.6billion 2 fight hunger with a population of 160million? may God almighty send fire 2 kill all nigeria leaders AMEN
