Power generation in the country has hit 4,502MW for the first time – FG

The Federal Government had on Monday announced that power generation has hit 4,502 megawatts, the highest in recent time. It said Nigeria has never had it this good.

This was disclosed by the Minister of information Mr. Labaran Maku, at a news conference as reported by NAN.

The Minister said, before the end of 2013 power generation would climb to 7,000MW. Maku said “At the moment, there is an average of about 15 to 18 hours per day of constant power supply to different parts of the country. This feat was brought about by the implementation of the integrated power sector reform programme anchored on the Power Roadmap.

“This includes institutional reforms to involve the private sector in power generation, transmission, and distribution.”

He said the federal government was working tirelessly to resolve the electricity issue, stating that already, 10 new thermal power plants had been completed and more were on the way.

He further affirmed that the plants will definitely boost electricity generation in the country in the New Year, and the federal government had planned on how to secure $1bn and $150m from the African Development Bank to finance the sector, he said.

Speaking on the rehabilitation of power generation and distribution equipment, he said the process was going on perfectly, that they had all been installed past 70 per cent completion. “The Kainji Hydro power station to generate power at installed capacity,” he said.

He said in a bid to generate more electricity, the federal government had awarded contracts for the generation of additional 750MW electricity at hydro power plants in Kaduna and Mambila Plateau.

“The implementation of the National Integrated Power Project is being fast-tracked to ensure stability in power supply,” he said.

    Sure doesn’t feel like it, cos power supply still remains the same.we’ve surely had it better.

    I don’t think Lagos is part of the so called”15 to 18 hours per day of constant power supply” especially those of us in Festac which is even under the Federal Government Control have access to 3hrs constant power supply, where it is available, it is low current all through, I will praise the president. When we are no longer in pitch darkness in Nigeria
