Telcos spend about N42 billion on power and security issues in 2012

From a review of year 2012 and the activities of the Telecommunications Companies, it has been revealed that about N42 billion was spent on the sustenance of power supply, provision of security around Telecoms gadgets, installations, equipment, and staff(especially expatriates).

Industry investigations showed that about N39.2 billion was spent on the provision of power for service delivery by the Telecommunications companies, while the Security aspect for all the key players in the
sector, revealed about N3billion spent for the year.

Part of the Challenges identified by the Service providers in the Telecommunications sector, for not delivering satisfactorily , has been the issue of irregular power supply in the country.

Companies like Airtel, Globacom, MTN, Etisalat, Visafone and Zoom spent so much on the purchase of over 20 million litres of diesel to power the generators in their offices(Call Centres, Shops etc)and their Base
Stations, an amazing analysis of expenditure.

President of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators in Nigeria (ALTON), in an interview said all the Base Stations(BTS) in the country are powered by the use of diesel, 24 hours every week.

He was also optimistic that 2013 will be an improved year for the sector, as the service providers have also invested in an alternative source of power like Wind, Solar, and green energy which will help in boosting their operational capacity and performance level.

On the issue of Security, the bombings of some of the Base stations of the network operators in the North, had affected service delivery in the region, while the issues of vandalization of installations across
the country, saw the companies partnering with security agencies in the country to safeguard their equipment.

Aside this, security agencies consultants like Technocrime and others got huge allocations this year, just to guarantee that the office facilities and other key operations of the Telecoms were well protected.
