NATCOM decries number portability delay by NCC

The perceived slow pace of the Number Portability project, a mobile technology initiative designed to give network subscribers the benefits of switching same number to any network at any time, has drawn criticisms from various groups.
One of the major groups unhappy with the delay of the project implementation is the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), the strongest body of telecom subscribers in Nigeria.

President of the Association, Mr Deolu Ogunbanjo, speaking recently on the delay of the project , felt it was impeding the demand for high quality service on the telecommunication network companies.

He believed that when the Portability project is implemented, it will create more competition in the Telecom Industry, and the
service providers will no longer be complacent on their job of delivering good network service to subscribers.
In the last two weeks network providers like Airtel and Etisalat have also been pushing for the implementation of the number
portability project in the country, believing it will bring more challenge and drive for excellence in the Telecom Industry.

Meanwhile the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Mr Eugene Juwah, while addressing the issue of the Number portability implementation on December 12, stressed that the issue of legal, technical and a comprehensive framework for the initiative is been taken into consideration before the full roll out.

He also stated that despite the postponement of the official launch of the service, the Commission is committed to the implementation of the Number Portability service by the First quarter of the year 2013, with full infrastructure which would be provided across the networks to support the service.
