Petrol Shortage Worsens, Prices Skyrocket, and Queues Emerge, Few Hours before Christmas
Lagos is the most hit, long queues characterized the few filling stations with the product. With many filling stations not having the product to sell, transporters, motorists and other consumers waited on Sunday at filling stations with hope and expectation for a difference.
Most of the few filling stations with the product decided to sell above the regulated price to make extra profit at the cost of stranded Nigerians.
Some filling stations sold petrol between N100 and N150 per litre. The same characterized filling stations at Mile 2, Lagos-Badagry Expressway, among others.
It was gathered that the situation has worsened in Abuja as filling stations have very long queues.
An official of an oil marketing company in Apapa, Lagos, who in confidence, said almost they have not received any product since last Thursday.
“In fact, this Saturday, we didn’t do anything. It will be very serious this Christmas because we don’t see any magic happening between now and Tuesday,” he said.
The President, Nigeria Union of Petroleum, and Natural Gas Workers, South-West branch, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, said there is every indication that fuel will be in short supply this season.
As the supply was still rationed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
“Petrol supply is not yet enough. They are still rationing the product,” Korodo said.
The NNPC had suspended supply of petrol through the line following the explosion. The corporation pumps about 11 million litres of petrol per day through the pipeline.
The Chairman, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Western Zone, Mr. Olumide Ogunmade, had described the incident as “a bad thing,” that would have an effect on product supply.
